“An Attitude of Rest”
Genesis 2:1-3- Is it possible that God knows we need to rest so He sets the example.
One day a week God wants to rest with us like a concerned parent. How many of us are missing the opportunity to rest with God?
Psalm 95:1-11- a famous Psalm about worship. By not keeping the Sabbath do we go astray in our hearts?
Let’s not become legalistic here. I’m talking about an attitude of rest.
Many of us live in stress, worry anxiety and fear. When we should live with and attitude of rest because God is in control and on His throne.
Hebrews 4:1-11 - Here the New Testament tells us we should enjoy a Sabbath rest!
TRNSITION: If we’re going to live with an attitude of rest there are three attitudes we may need to change.
THREE ATTITUDES WE MAY NEED TO CHANGE
I. Attitude toward Work
We spend most of our time focused on work. Feeling guilty when we don’t do enough and resentful when we do to much.
Our lives revolve around work. You’ll never have a proper understanding of rest until you understand work.
You’ll never appreciate the gift of rest until you understand the gift of work.
Work is not a part of the curse brought on by Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.
Genesis 2:15- “The Lord God took the man and put him in the Garden of Eden to work it and take care of it.”
God created work because He loves us. He wanted us to do something that would be fulfilling and rewarding.
Now the curse does make work harder. Ever had a bad day at work. If so do the following.

We are all God by God to do something. Whatever you do as a believer is the Work of the Lord for you!
Some of the best rest you’ll ever have is after a hard days work!
TRANSITION: To have an attitude of rest we may need to change our attitude toward work. The next attitude we may need to change is our
II. Attitude toward Time
We’re always rushing around trying to save and make time.
Three things about time.
(a). You cannot make time.
(b). You cannot save time
(c). You can only spend time.
The question is, how are you going to spend your time, wisely or foolishly?
You have a choice every second of the day. How are you going to spend your time?
Here’s the sad thing. We believe rest is a poor investment of our time.
Just like tithing, many people don’t believe that 90% with God’s blessing goes further than 100% without His blessing.
Many people don’t believe that 6 days with God’s blessing you can accomplish more than 7 days without it.
IT’S A CHOICE, WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO DO WITH YOUR TIME?
The following two scriptures are part of the ten commandments. Each gives a different reason for obeying the fourth commandment.
Exodus 20:8-11- Why rest, God created us.
Deuteronomy 5:12-15- Why rest, God redeemed us from slavery.
***Slaves can’t rest. They cannot choose to take a day off. A person is standing there with a whip saying you cannot take a day off right now.
***When you try and rest here’s what the task-master is saying to you. “Who do you think you are and what do you think You’re doing?”
Have you forgotten all the things you need to be doing right now? Apparently you have so let me list them for you
God sent His Son Jesus to set you free from slavery.
TRANSITION: So that leads to the third attitude we may need to change if we’re going to have an attitude of rest.
III. Attitude Toward God
IF YOU HAVE A DIFFICULT TIME RESTING IT’S BECAUSE YOU DON’T TRUST GOD!
GOD MIGHT NOT BE UP TO THE TASK OF TAKING CARE OF THINGS IF YOU’RE NOT WORKING.
Hebrews 3:18,19
(Share the Story of “Correct Craft”) This is a company owned by Christian people. They always take Sunday off.
During WWII the army was needing 700 boats made in 15 days to cross the Rhine River in Germany.
They went to Correct Craft and 4 other companies.
Correct Craft was making 60 boats in a month. Which would be 30 boats in 15 days.
They prayed and God told them He would help them build 300 boats in 15 days. They had several hundred volunteers agree to help them.
****They made it known they were going to take Sunday off. A Coronal in the Army got upset and was going to shut the company down.
A Christian General heard about it and stopped the proceedings.
They said we’ll get more done in 6 days than working 7.
They made 300 boats in 12 days. The 4 other companies were going to make 100 boats each. They were behind.
Correct Craft made 100 more boats in three days.
CONCLUSION: An attitude of rest is an attitude of trust. Do you trust God?
Psalms 95:7-11(MSG)
1. Drop Everything and Listen, listen as He speaks
2. Can’t they keep their minds on God for five minutes
3. They’ll never get where they’re headed, never be able to sit down and rest.
