TOTAL OTHERS

“We Need Each Other”

Acts 2:41-47(NIV) Turn and Read

The ingredients for a healthy church. The ingredients that when warmed in the presence of God provide an incubator for God to send New Born Believers.
1. They were devoted to the Apostles Teaching
2. They were devoted to fellowship
3. They were devoted to the breaking of bread
4. They were devoted to prayer
Verse 44- “All the believers were together…”
Verse 46- “Everyday they continued to meet together in the temple courts. They broke bread together in their homes and ate together with glad and sincere hearts.”
The evidence is clear- THESE FOLKS LOVED BEING AROUND OTHERS! WHY?
Romans 12:5(NLT)- “….since we are all one body in Christ we belong to each other, and each of needs all the others.”

TOTAL OTHERS-WE NEED EACH OTHER

I. I NEED PEOPLE WHO WILL WALK WITH ME
Genesis 2:18(NIV)- “….it’s not good for man to be alone.”
Hebrews 10:25(NIV)- “Let us not give up meeting together, as some are in the habit of doing, but let us encourage one another-and all the more as you see the Day approaching.”
OTHERS IS GOD’S ANSWER TO LONELINESS
Proverbs 18:1(NKJ)- “A man who isolates himself seeks his own desire: He rages against all wise judgment.”
Message- “Loners who care only for themselves spit on the common good.”

WE NEED EACH OTHER

Ephesians 4:16(NLT)- “Under his direction, the whole body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow, so that the whole body is healthy and growing and full of love.”

TRANSITION: I need people who will walk with me because OTHERS is God’s answer to loneliness. WE NEED EACH OTHER!

II. I NEED PEOPLE WHO WILL WORK WITH ME
Ephesians 2:10(NIV)- “For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
Ecclesiastes 4:9(NIV)- “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their work:”

OTHERS IS GOD’S ANSWER TO FATIGUE

Galatians 6:9,10(MSG)- “So let us not allow ourselves to get fatigued doing good. At the right time we will harvest a good crop if we don’t give up, or quit. Right now, therefore, every time we get the chance, let us work for the benefit of all, starting with the people closest to us in the community of faith.”

TRANSITION: I need others who will work with me because others is God’s answer to Fatigue.

III. I NEED PEOPLE WHO WILL FIGHT FOR ME
Philippians 2:4(NIV)- “Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others.”
Ecclesiastes 4:12(NLT)- “A person standing alone can be attached and defeated , but two can stand back to back and conquer. Three are even better, for a triple-braided cord is not easily broken.”

WE NEED EACH OTHER

OTHERS IS GOD’S ANSWER TO DEFEAT

Ecclesiastes 4:10(NLT)- “If one person falls, the other can reach out and help. But people who are alone when they fall are in real trouble.”

TRANSITION: I need people who will fight for me because OTHERS is God’s answer to defeat.

IV. I NEED PEOPLE WHO WILL CRY WITH ME

1Peter 3:8(LB)- “You should be like one big family, full of sympathy toward each other.”

WE NEED EACH OTHER

1Corinthians 12:26(NIV)- “If one part suffers, every part suffers with it…”

OTHERS IS GOD’S ANSWER TO DESPAIR

Romans 12:15(NIV)- “Rejoice with those who rejoice; mourn with those who mourn.”
1Thessalonians 5:11(NIV)- “Therefore encourage one another and build each other up, just as in fact you are doing.”

TRANSITION: I need people who will cry with me because OTHERS is God’s answer to despair.

V. I NEED PEOPLE WHO WILL PARTNER WITH ME

WE NEED EACH OTHER

John 15:4,5(NIV)- “Remain in me, and I will remain in you. No branch can bear fruit by itself; it must remain in the vine. Neither can you bear fruit unless you remain in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. If a man remains in me and I in him, he will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing.”

OTHERS IS GOD’S ANSWER TO SIGNIFICANCE

Philippians 1:27,28(MSG)- “….Stand united, singular in vision, contending for people’s trust in the Message, the good news, not flinching or dodging in the slightest before the opposition. Your courage and unity will show them what there’re up against: defeat for them, victory for you-and both because of God.”

I need people to partner with me because OTHERS is God’s answer to significance.

CONCLUSION: WE NEED EACH OTHER! It called being part of something that’s bigger than just me.

Romans 12:5(NIV)- “so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”

Does Your Shoulder Lean - Cheri Osberg

Download MP3 audio

Does Your Shoulder Lean?

Ask your neighbor… “Does Your Shoulder Lean?”

I had this question asked to me when listening to a sermon by Chris Hill and I wasn’t sure how to answer it at first…but when we read 2 Samuel 6:1-14… since then my daily motivation is…”Does My Shoulder Lean?”

When Pastor asked me to teach tonight – this immediately came to my mind and I haven’t been able to shack it since.

To give you a little back story…
-Many Chapters ago in 1 Samuel – the Ark of God had been stolen by the Philistines.
-David has been anointed King and decided he wanted the Ark of God back.

Read: 2 Samuel 6:1 & 2 (NIV) – “1David again brought together out of Israel chosen men, thirty thousand in all. 2He and all his men set out from Baalah of Judah to bring up from there the ark of God, which is called by the Name, the name of the LORD Almighty, who is enthroned between the cherubim that are on the ark.”

To understand why it was so important to David to have the Ark of God back in Jerusalem…we have to understand what the Ark of God represented.

WHAT THE ARK MEANT TO GOD'S PEOPLE: (Show Picture of the Ark)
• The ark became the focus of God's presence among his people - God would regularly appear in a cloud of glory on the mercy seat of the ark.
Ex. 25:22 (NLT) - I will meet with you there and talk to you from above the atonement cover between the gold cherubim that hover over the Ark of the Covenant. From there I will give you my commands for the people of Israel.

• A person who came before the ark was entering into God's presence.
Lev. 16:2 (NLT) - The Lord said to Moses, “Warn your brother, Aaron, not to enter the Most Holy Place behind the inner curtain whenever he chooses; if he does, he will die. For the Ark’s cover—the place of atonement—is there, and I myself am present in the cloud above the atonement cover.

• The imagery of the ark expressed the people's longing to feel safe in God's protecting arms: "... under his wings you will find refuge"
Ps. 91:4(NLT) - He will cover you with his feathers. He will shelter you with his wings. His faithful promises are your armor and protection.

• The ark provided evidence that the Holy God of Abraham was a protecting, forgiving presence in the lives of his people.

• The ark also gave assurance that the Lord was sovereign over all things.

• The people saw the box as God's footstool
1 Chron. 28:2(NLT) - David rose to his feet and said: “My brothers and my people! It was my desire to build a temple where the Ark of the Lord’s Covenant, God’s footstool, could rest permanently. I made the necessary preparations for building it.

• What was there to fear when God was on his throne attended by the cherubim?
Ps. 99:1 (NLT) - The Lord is king! Let the nations tremble! He sits on his throne between the cherubim. Let the whole earth quake!

David was passionate about getting the Ark of God back to Jerusalem.

He knew the importance of being in God’s presence. There is nothing he long for more.

He was so hungry for the presence of God that he made 30,000 people hunger for God, also.

David’s passion for God and God’s presence was contagious. 30,000 people were willing to lay down their lives to get to the Presence of God that David longed for.

Who are you infecting?
• If we prioritize the presence of God in our lives, we will affect more than we will destroy and our family, friends, nation, generation will be changed.

• Prayer and Fasting helps me prioritize God in my life. I want God’s presences in my life more than anything, submitting my fleshly needs (or wants) to go help me focus on Him, check my motivation for the days design…

• It is easy for me to focus on myself, what I want, what I am doing…me, me, me…but in the Presence of God – all the “I”s in me diminish and I focus more on God and others. Does this passion for God I have infect anyone else?

Read: 2 Samuel 6:3-7 (NIV) – 3They set the ark of God on a new cart and brought it from the house of Abinadab, which was on the hill. Uzzah and Ahio, sons of Abinadab, were guiding the new cart 4with the ark of God on it, and Ahio was walking in front of it. 5David and the whole house of Israel were celebrating with all their might before the LORD, with songs and with harps, lyres, tambourines, sistrums and cymbals.
6When they came to the threshing floor of Nacon, Uzzah reached out and took hold of the ark of God, because the oxen stumbled. 7The LORD's anger burned against Uzzah because of his irreverent act; therefore God struck him down and he died there beside the ark of God.

God had given the Israelites many rules concerning the Ark of the Covenant.
• It was to be kept in the Most Holy Place in the temple, hidden from view by a curtain
-Ex 26:33 (NLT) - Hang the inner curtain from clasps, and put the Ark of the Covenant in the room behind it. This curtain will separate the Holy Place from the Most Holy Place.

• Only the high priest could enter the Most Holy Place, and then only after he had undergone ceremonial cleansing, made sacrifices to atone for his sins and the nation's sins, and burned incense to conceal the atonement cover (Lev 16).

• When the ark was moved, it was covered with at least 3 layers of cloth by the priests to protect others from seeing it
-Num 4:5-6, 15, 18-20 (NLT) - 5When the camp moves, Aaron and his sons must enter the Tabernacle first to take down the inner curtain and cover the Ark of the Covenant with it. 6Then they must cover the inner curtain with fine goatskin leather and spread over that a single piece of blue cloth. 15The camp will be ready to move when Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the sacred articles. The Kohathites will come and carry these things to the next destination. But they must not touch the sacred objects, or they will die. So these are the things from the Tabernacle that the Kohathites must carry. 18Do not let the Kohathite clans be destroyed from among the Levites! 19This is what you must do so they will live and not die when they approach the most sacred objects. Aaron and his sons must always go in with them and assign a specific duty or load to each person. 20The Kohathites must never enter the sanctuary to look at the sacred objects for even a moment, or they will die.”

• Finally, they must put the carrying poles of the Ark in place; the priests/Levites carried it and everyone else had to stay about a thousand yards away
-Ex 25:14-15 (NLT) - 14Insert the poles into the rings at the sides of the Ark to carry it. 15These carrying poles must stay inside the rings; never remove them.
-Josh 3:4 (NLT) - Since you have never traveled this way before, they will guide you. Stay about a half mile behind them, keeping a clear distance between you and the Ark. Make sure you don’t come any closer.”

• These laws enforced the concept of God's holiness: sinful people couldn't be in his presence, not even the high priest.

Hence, when Uzzah touched the ark, he was profaning it and disobeying God; he should have grabbed the poles used for carrying the ark instead, for that was their purpose.

When Uzzah died David was mad and became afraid

Read: 2 Samuel 6:8-11 (NIV) - 8Then David was angry because the LORD's wrath had broken out against Uzzah, and to this day that place is called Perez Uzzah.
9David was afraid of the LORD that day and said, "How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me?" 10He was not willing to take the ark of the LORD to be with him in the City of David. Instead, he took it aside to the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite. 11The ark of the LORD remained in the house of Obed-Edom the Gittite for three months, and the LORD blessed him and his entire household.

In pursuit of the presence of God you will have to step over some dead things.
• Don’t be delayed by fear.

• David hears about the blessings on the house of Obed-Edom because of the Ark being there and he his passion for the presence of God was renewed. He wanted the blessing; he wanted the presence of God.

Read: 2 Samuel 6:12-14 (NIV) - 12 Now King David was told, "The LORD has blessed the household of Obed-Edom and everything he has, because of the ark of God." So David went down and brought up the ark of God from the house of Obed-Edom to the City of David with rejoicing. 13 When those who were carrying the ark of the LORD had taken six steps, he sacrificed a bull and a fattened calf. 14 David, wearing a linen ephod, danced before the LORD with all his might.

David had to go back and carry the Ark of the Covenant the right way.

The ark shouldn't have been on a cart, but should have been carried on people's shoulders.
• 1 Chr 15:15 (NLT) - Then the Levites carried the Ark of God on their shoulders with its carrying poles, just as the Lord had instructed Moses.

God is looking for somebody who ways… “I will be the one who will carry the presence of God.”

• Will you be a carrier?

• Does your Shoulder lean?

Man was created to carry the ark – is there a weight on you – the weight of Glory that causes you to go in a certain way?
The presence of God that causes your shoulder to lean?

New Life COTR Sunday February 11, 2007
TOTAL OTHERS - Pastor Kenneth Woolf
INTRODUCTION: It’s great to be home! As you know we have chosen a theme to focus on for the first three months of the year. Each month is a different theme.
Last month we discovered what it means to be TOTAL GOD!
This month we’re going on a journey to discover what it means to be TOTAL OTHERS!
Why is the word TOTAL significant to us?
Ephesians 6:7- “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord not men.”
Deuteronomy 1:35,36- “Not a man of this evil generation shall see the good land I swore to give your forefathers, except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give him and his descendants the land he set his feet on, because he followed the Lord wholeheartedly.”
With these verses in mind we can see the value of being TOTAL GOD! Now we will discover the value of being TOTAL OTHERS!
Four different places in the scripture we see this big idea of TOTAL OTHERS!
Genesis 12:2- “I will make you a great nation and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.”
Abraham-The Father of our faith- TOTAL OTHERS
Luke 4:18,19- “The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because He has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind, to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.”
Jesus-The substance of our faith-TOTAL OTHERS
Acts 1:8- “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”
Disciples-They proclaimed the faith-TOTAL OTHERS
Acts 2:42- “They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and to prayer.
Early Church-They believed in the faith-TOTAL OTHERS
TRANSITION: Where do you find the idea of TOTAL OTHERS in the early church?
They were DEVOTED to FELLOWSHIP!
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP!
1John 4:21- “And he has given us this command: Whoever loves God must also love his brother.”
“The person who loves God must also love other believers.”
Fellowship is loving God’s Family!
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP!
Loving God’s family is loving the church!
1Timothy 3:14,15- “Although I hope to come to you soon, I am writing you these instructions so that, if I am delayed, you will know how people ought to conduct themselves in God’s household, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and foundation of the truth.”
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP!
WHAT IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP?
I. CHOOSING TO BELONG
Ephesians 2:19(LB)- “You are members of God’s very own family…and you belong in God’s household with every other Christian.”
I choose to belong to something that’s greater than just me.
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP! I choose to belong!
Romans 12:5- (NIV)- “so in Christ we who are many form one body, and each member belongs to all the others.”
Total Fellowship is choosing to belong.
TRANSITION: Total Fellowship is
II. LEARNING TO SHARE
Acts 2:44(LB)- “All the believers met together constantly and shared everything with each other.”
Total Fellowship is choosing to belong and learning to share.
WHAT DO WE SHARE?
a. Our Experiences
Proverbs 27:17(NIV)- “As iron sharpens iron, so one man sharpens another.”
b. Our homes
1Peter 4:9- “Offer hospitality to one another without grumbling.”
c. Our problems
Galatians 6:2(NLT)- “Share each others troubles and problems.”
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP. Total Fellowship is 1. Choosing to Belong 2. Learning to Share
Hebrews 10:25- “Let us not give up the habit of meeting together. Instead let us encourage one another.”
TRANSITION: Total Fellowship is
III. DOING MY PART
1Corinthians 3:9- “We are partners working together for God.”
Total Fellowship is Choosing to belong, Learning to Share and doing my Part!
Ephesians 4:16(NLT)- “The whole Body is fitted together perfectly. As each part does its own special work, it helps the other parts grow so that the whole Body is healthy and growing and full of love.”
When you do your part, you’re doing it for Jesus!
Matthew 25:40- “The King will reply, I tell you the truth, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers of mine, you did for me.”
TRANSITION: Total Others is Total Fellowship. Total Fellowship is 1. Choosing to Belong 2. Learning to Share 3. Doing My Part and
IV. LOVING BELIEVERS LIKE FAMILY
1Peter 4:8(NIV)- “Above all, love each other deeply, because love covers over a multitude of sins.”
1Peter 1:22- “Now that you have purified yourselves by obeying the truth so that you have sincere love for your brothers, love one another deeply, from the heart.”
Total Others is Total Fellowship. Total Fellowship is Loving Believers Like Family!
CONCLUSION: Remember Acts 2:42? They were “devoted to fellowship.”
Romans 12:10- “Be devoted to one another in brotherly love. Honor one another above yourselves.”
Total Fellowship is 1. Choosing to Belong, 2. Learning to Share, 3. Doing my Part, 4. Loving Believers Like Family.
TOTAL OTHERS IS TOTAL FELLOWSHIP
1John 3:16- “This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for our brothers.”
John 13:34,35- “A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
